About the Audi A3

The Audi A3 is a premium compact car available in 5-door (hatchback) and 4-door (sedan) guises. Although the Audi A3 is not as popular as it used to be (due to the popularity of modern SUVs), the A3 appeals to those who want a car with a desirable badge on the grille (as well as a reasonable practicality), or premium car owners who would like to buy a smaller-model car without losing the luxury-car feel.

Is the Audi A3 Hatchback a good car?

The Audi A3 offers a luxurious “big car” driving experience by virtue of its refined platform. It combines tasteful exterior styling with a smartly finished cabin that is packed with the latest infotainment technology. Whereas the sporty S3 and RS3 offer more driver engagement than standard derivatives, the Audi A3 delivers a good blend of performance and efficiency. Like other Audi models, all versions of the A3 come with a 100 000 km maintenance plan from new, which means that services and repairs are covered by Audi for the first 5 years.

Rating:

Because the A3 is covered by a maintenance plan, any mechanical or component faults that occur during the first 5 years of 100 000 km of ownership will be repaired at no cost to the owner by an Audi- or authorised service centre. The fact that the model is equipped with several electronic systems and features may impact its reliability in the long run, however.

Rating:

The Audi A3 was awarded a 5-star rating by Euro NCAP. It comes standard with dual front-, side and curtain airbags. ABS with EBD and electronic stability control, light and rain sensor, ISOfix child seat anchors in front and top tether for outer rear seats. More safety equipment is optionally available or fitted as standard on higher-spec derivatives of the model.

Rating:

The Audi A3 range is powered by 1.4- and 2.0-litre 4-cylinder, as well as 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo petrol engines with peak outputs of 110 kW/250 Nm, 140 kW/320 Nm, 213 kW/400 Nm (S3) and 294 kW/500 Nm (RS3) respectively. This gives Audi A3 derivatives claimed 0-100 kph acceleration times of 8.2- to 3.8 sec and top speeds electronically limited to 250 kph.

Rating:

By virtue of the Audi A3’s standard maintenance plan, all annual services and maintenance will be covered by the manufacturer for the first 5 years or 100 000 km of ownership. In terms of fuel consumption, A3 powertrains employ various efficiency technologies, including dual-clutch automatic transmissions. Claimed fuel consumption varies between 6.1 and 6.3 L/100 km for 35TFSI and 40TFSI derivatives, with the S3 at 7.8–8.0 L/100 km and the RS3 at 9.0 L/100 km. Bear in mind tyre replacement costs go up in relation with alloy-wheel sizes.

Whereas some older-generation Audi A3 derivatives offered in the South African market had non-turbocharged 4- and 6-cylinder petrol engines, recent versions of the model (such as the 3rd- and 4th-generation cars) are powered by turbocharged engines. Turbodiesel versions of the Audi A3 are relatively rare in South Africa… most examples use petrol.
An Audi A3 is sold with a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan, which means for the first 5 years of ownership, or 100 000 km of service, an owner will only need to pay for fuel, tyres, licensing, and insurance. After that, however, bear in mind that the Audi A3 is a luxury car that is equipped with many systems and components that may be expensive to repair or replace.
