Peugeot Cars
History of Peugeot
Peugeot is a French car manufacturer that began in the 1700’s as a general goods production company, producing a variety of tools and initially bicycles. The first Peugeot automobile was made in 1889, designed by Leon Serpollet, the car was steam-powered. The initial Peugeot cars were run on engines made by Daimler but in 1896 Peugeot made their own engine, an 8 horse-power horizontal twin. With the onset of the War, as with many automobile companies during the time, Peugeot began producing arms and vehicles from their factories. Following the World Wars, Peugeot began selling their vehicles in the United States and their vehicles gained a global reach. In 1975 Peugeot took over Citroen, thanks in-part to a grant from the French government. Peugeot then acquired Chrysler Europe in 1978. PSA Pegueot-Citroen is currently the second largest car manufacturer in Europe. The Peugeot range of cars in South Africa is spear-headed by the ever popular Peugeot 206.
